Bannack Best

Can: 5/25/11, 1PM, Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/80; Nikon D3000

There was some random metal things laying in the grass next to one of the buildings. While I was waiting there for my group I just thought I would take a picture. I liked the angle that I ended up getting. I set the camera on the ground and aimed down the can. In camera raw I increased the clarity and the sharpness. Then I desaturated it to be black and white. I brought up the blacks more than just the default.

Chair: 5/25/11, 12PM, Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/60; Nikon D3000

I sat on the ground and aimed the camera up at the chair. I liked how it looked like it was placed there for someone to look out the window. I brought out the reds and oranges in camera so the redness from the chair and the browns in the wall would be enhanced more.

Lock: 5/25/11, 12PM, Bannack, MT; f 5.6; 1/60; Nikon D3000

I focused on the end of the lock so that as it got away it would become more blurry. I increased the sharpness and clarity to have more of an effect. Then increased the greens so show more of the texture. So the greens stood out but not too much I also increased the blacks.

Cemetery: 5/25/11, 7PM, Bannack, MT; f 7.1; 1/200; Nikon D3000

During the five minutes at the cemetery I wasn't liking any of the shots of the headstones so I decided to take one of the posts. With everyone running around i didn't want to get a person in my background so I focused on the plant that was in front of the post. I increased the blue and blacks in camera to emphasize the sky and the plant stem.

Reflection: 5/25/11, 1PM, Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/200; Nikon D3000

We were taking pictures in front of this building then realized that we would get peoples reflections in the window. So then we found the best angle that would show the reflection. She is leaning on the pole that is outside. But its lined up that the pole and the wood piece in the center of the window match up. You can see the pieces inside the building that also look like they are outside which adds to the affect. I added a vignette and then desaturated the color but messed with the hue to get the right brown.

HDR

Pans: 5/25/11, 4PM, Bannack, MT; f 4.5; 1/20; Nikon D3000

I mainly messed with the colors to bring out the oranges in the pan and the stove in the background. When taking the picture I put the camera through a bar on the side of the stove and shot at the pans. I didn't want all three of the pans fully in the shot. I thought if both the orange and blue were then it would be too distracting. That is also why I focused mainly on the oranges when editing the photo in dynamic photo.

Stove: 5/25/11, 1PM, Bannack, MT; f 5; 1/10; Nikon D3000; tripod

I rested the camera on a tripod as I took the picture and manually changed the exposure compensation up and down. Then in dynamic photo I brought up the colors, mainly the reds and intensity. I brought out the light from the window more. I increased the blacks and the contrast. The rust became really emphasized in the final copy. I made it have more of a vintage/grunge look to emphasize the age of this stove.

Macro Abstract

Door: 5/25/11, 4PM, Bannack, MT; f 3.5; 1/100; Nikon D3000

Tree: 5/25/11, 1PM, Bannack, MT; f 5.6; 1/160; Nikon D3000

When taking the picture of the door I got up high and focused the latch so the handle and as you went down the door it would be out of focus. Finding the tree I zoomed in on the most textured part of the treed. I used the blending mode overlay with the opacity of 73% and a fill of 62%. I placed the tree directly over the door.

Reverse Shallow Depth

Fence: 5/25/11, 5PM, Bannack, MT; f 5; 1/200; Nikon D3000

House: 5/25/11, 5PM, Bannack, MT; f 8; 1/100; Nikon D3000

These pictures I sat on the ground and shot up at the house. I focused on the fence in one and the house in the other. In camera raw I bumped up the oranges and yellows in both to bring out the colors in the house more. Then I added more blacks to show the different pieces of wood more. I also increased the sharpness on both of them.

Action Blur and Freeze

Merry-go-round: 5/25/11, 6PM, Bannack, MT; f22; 0.3; Nikon D3000

Jumping: 5/25/11, 5PM, Bannack, MT; f 4.5; 1/500; Nikon D3000

With the merry-go-round I wanted to get the fence in it so it wasn't the same shot as Sister Esplin and to show that they were the one moving and not me. I rested the camera partially on the fence but far enough away that I could get both the merry-go-round and the fence in the shot. In camera I played with the colors a lot to make it look more dingy. With the Jumping picture Cory jumped off the log. We had to find the best direction to jump off because if I shot any other direction we had too much of the sky in the background and it would wash out a lot of the picture. I then bumped up the greens and blues in camera raw.

Portraits

Bartender: 5/25/11; 2PM, Bannack, MT; f5.6; 1/125; Nikon D3000

Cory: 5/25/11, 1PM, Bannack, MT; f 4; 1/1000; Nikon D3000

Madeleine: 5/25/11, 2PM, Bannack, MT; f 5.6; 1/30; Nikon D3000

Madeleine and the bartender picture were both taken in the salon. For the bartender I used the flash and umbrella. I didn't edit the picture at all. For Madeleine she used the mirror to bring light up on her face. Then in camera raw I brought out the oranges and yellows to make the wall behind her darker so she would stand out more. With Cory we put the white part of the reflector above his head to dampen the sunlight. Then put the gold reflector to bring light onto his face at the right angle. We aimed it more at the wood around him and it still reflected onto his face. I then just sharpened it and brought out the contrast more.

Enhancements

Megan: 5/22/11; 1PM; 1/2000; f4.8; Nikon D3000

I know the picture looks really fake but thats what we were trying to do. In the picture she was joking around and with added the really white teeth and making the background really green I feel like it was bringing out more what she was laughing at in the picture.

Gaze: 5/22/11; 1PM; 1/125; f5.6; Nikon D3000

I brought out the reds and the vibrance in this picture so the bench would stand out. I then replaced her hair color with brown.

Stairs: 5/22/11; 1PM; 1/200; f6.3; Nikon D3000

Girls: 5/22/11; 1PM; 1/200; f4.5; Nikon D3000

I wanted this picture to be more vibrant so I took a picture of them in a different location and got the picture to have a little darker color. But the affect we were going for wasn't the dark vibrant color so I didn't want to add too much to it.

Portraits

Bubbles: 5/7/11; 9AM; 1/400; f4 Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi

Ashley was just sitting in the grass playing with her bubbles she got at a birthday party the night before. She was so proud of herself with all the bubbles she could make. I went along the side of the house and took a few. I really like how this one turned out because you could see the bubbles in the air as well as the ones coming out of the bubble straw.

Labrums: 5/7/11; 3PM; 1/80; f5.6; Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi

They wanted a family shot by the waterfall. To be able to get the waterfall and all the kids in we put them up on the rock. I brought out the vibrance and the blacks to have the their shirts and the sunglasses pop. With pulling out the blacks it darkened the rocks and showed the water more.

Leeann: 5/22/11; 1PM; 1/125; f5.6; Nikon D3000

I loved the door and how it was worn on the bottom. I asked Leeann if she would go in it and pose. She did a bunch of different poses but this one was the best and i felt you could see the door the most. I brought out the blacks so the door would stand out more and be darker.

Megan: 5/22/11; 1PM; 1/125; f 5.6; Nikon D3000

All I did to this picture was add a vignette. Megan was just sitting down thinking while waiting for me to need her again for pictures and I saw the background behind her and loved the wall. I had her not move and took a couple. I like how shes not really smiling. You can tell she's thinking and I feel that brings out her personality.

Signing: 5/22/11: 10PM; 1/60; f 4.5; Nikon D3000

My roommate fractured her foot so she was having another roommate sign in. I got down on the floor and quick took a couple shots. In Camera Raw I brought out the blacks and the contrast to darken it. I felt the coloring matched both of their style and didn't want to change it much more.

Waterfall: 5/7/11; 3PM; 1/80; f5.6; Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi

Trevor was walking around with his hands in his pockets because he felt like such a man after hiking so far all by himself. He had walked over to the waterfall so I had him turn around and quick snapped the shot. I put some tint on it to bring out the blue in the water. His teeth were shadowed by his lips quite a bit so I whitened them and added vibrance to bring out the red in his shorts.

Cheeto: 5/7/11; 3PM; 1/250; f3.5; Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi

I'm glad this picture turned out. Trevor was sitting on my lap and eating Cheetos and wouldn't let me take a picture of him. I put the camera in front of his face hoping that I would get it all in. As I did that he turned so I moved the camera and took only one shot and this is what I got. I bumped up the vibrance so the Cheetos would stand out more. But I didn't want to mess with much else. I wanted to keep the dirt on his face because we just hiked up a mountain and he's four and he was able to do it all himself and that reminds me.

Trevor: 5/7/11; 10AM; 1/400; f5; Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi

I was taking my flora and fauna pictures and Trevor was sitting on the rocks and said take a picture of me. I didn't have time to change any settings because he moves so quick so I'm glad it turned out. I bumped up the vibrance and lowered the clarity a little bit. Other than that I didn't edit this picture at all

Camera Raw

Trevor: 5/7/2011; 10AM; 1/320; f4.5; Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi

With Trevor I slightly got rid of some exposure, added fill light, blacks, contrast, vibrance, and saturation. I look way some clarity so the rocks would have a slight blur. I added some highlights and vignetting. I wanted the picture to look more life like and not flat and dull. I wanted more of the focus to be on him and so I had to make him stand out from the rocks.

Waterfall: 5/7/2011; 3PM; 1/160 f5.6; Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi

This waterfall photo is a raw image. I increased the temperature, brightness, fill light, vibrance, saturation and blacks. I look away some of the exposure. I wanted the picture to look a little bit more fake. The water turned that blue with the changes I made. I didn't have to mess with any of the hues.

Train: 4/28/2011; 2PM; 1/40; f20; Nikon D3000

This photo I got rid of some of the exposure and brought out some of the blacks and made it more vibrant. I lessened the highlights and added vignetting. I added more of a blue hue so that the clouds would have more definition.

Panoramic

Waterfall: Ogden, UT; 5/7/2011; 3PM 1/160 sec; f/5.6; Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi
I merged the photos together using photomerge. There wasn't too much space to fill in around the edges so I just cropped the photo down. I then enhanced the exposure and the saturation to bring out the wetness of the rock to more of what I saw with my eye.

City View: 5/7/2011; 3PM; shutter speed: 1/160, 1/200, 1/100; f stop 10, 10, 7.1; Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xsi

I merged the photos together with photomerge. The unfilled spaces were in the top of the sky and the rock. I felt that There was enough of the white part of the sky and more than enough rock/mountain. Instead of filling it in I just cropped this picture as well. I then applied an exposure adjustment layer to bring out some more color in the sky.
